Frequently Asked Questions
Last week I was at the Vitality Show in London, after spending 3 really enjoyable days, talking to and hypnotizing hundreds of people, here are the types of questions that they all asked me:
What does hypnosis feel like? People have different expectations about hypnosis, some people feel heaviness, others feel very light, but everyone feels incredibly relaxed, it’s like an after feeling of wow that felt good!

| You won't be able to hypnotize me because I don't like to ‘lose control’. The hypnotherapist is a guide and doesn’t control you. You are always in control, hypnosis produces a heightened state of awareness in which physically you are relaxed, but your mind is alert and aware. | ||
Can I be made to do something I don’t want to? You are fully aware and alert during hypnosis. You know exactly what is going on, therefore, you will not do anything under hypnosis contrary to your moral principles. You are fully in control, so you could never be ‘forced’ to do something against your will.

| How many sessions will I need? Because I use Advanced Regression Hypnosis and looking to treat the problem and not just the symptom it is generally between 2 and 6 sessions. Each client is individual and we would discuss this fully during the consultation. | ||
How long is each session? Each session lasts for one hour. The session is always ended with a positive experience. A feeling of well being stays with you long after you open your eyes.

Isn’t it expensive? If you look at the amount of money people spend over the years on diet products, quick fix solutions, over the counter remedies, prescriptions, cigarettes, alcohol, time lost being off work to name just a few, it quickly becomes obvious that hypnosis is an investment in your long term health.

Will it work? A large percentage of our daily actions are performed subconsciously, which means we are generally unaware of why we do things, because it is automatic. During hypnosis we deal directly with the subconscious so it is a very effective way of removing issues and inserting suggestions that are of benefit. Hypnosis is a wonderful experience, because you will have been so deeply relaxed, after your session you will feel re-energized, clients have said its like having 8 hours deep sleep!

Can anyone be hypnotized? Virtually everyone can be hypnotized. If you have an average intelligence with the ability to concentrate. If you are motivated to be hypnotized and you cooperate. If fact the more hypnosis you experience, you have an ability to improve and become better ‘subjects’.

Is it only weak willed people who can be hypnotized? Not at all, often strong willed and determined people make the best ‘subjects’ because they are generally highly motivated to improve and change their situations.

Aren’t people just pretending to be hypnotized? There is lots of evidence of major surgery being performed with only hypnosis as the anesthetic. (see the section on surgery for more information).

Are you asleep when you’re hypnotized? Although when you are deeply relaxed you may look like you’re asleep, research studies utilizing brain-wave patterns demonstrate that the hypnotized subject does not exhibit the same brain wave patterns of sleep.

Do I need to be very deeply hypnotized? Many excellent results are obtained when clients are only in a state of light hypnosis.

Is it possible to never wake up? Since you are alert and you are concentrating on the therapist’s voice, they will guide you back to a normal consciousness, slowly to enhance your experience. If an emergency arose your conscious mind, for your safety would ‘kick in’ and you would open your eyes and be fully awake.

Is it safe? The British Psychological Society (BPS) concluded …Hypnosis is generally a benign procedure and consideration of potential risks resembles those for other similar psychological methods. (BPS, 2001). If you are going to be hypnotized make sure that the Therapist is fully trained and qualified, insured and registered with a recognized body such as the General Hypnotherapy Register.
