Surgery and Pain Management
There are many benefits to using hypnotherapy in for surgery and pain management.
For Pain Management, an assessment and evaluation is required in the first instance. Then with the numerous techniques available a program will be tailored to fit the specific needs of each client. Pain is complex disorder and many considerations need to be taken into account.
Hypnosis was used long before anaesthetic was considered a safe alternative. Dr Jack Gibson, from Ireland, graduated from Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin, in 1933. Over a period of 50 years he carried out over 4000 medical procedures, including many major operations.
Hypnosis can be utilized pre, post and during operations. It has the benefit of keeping the patient calm and relaxed. (stopping the fight or flight response). Building the immune system. Reducing blood loss, bruising and swelling. Speeding the recovery. Reducing or eliminating pain relief.
In February 2007, Pauline Hill from London had a screw removed from her ankle. Usually this type of operation requires a general anaesthetic. I was in the operating theatre with Ms Hill giving her hypnosis, she was able to undergo the surgery without any anaesthetic, and walk out of hospital an hour later. She felt no pain or discomfort.
I was able to utilize self hypnosis when I underwent surgery on my left shoulder in November 2007. Although I had anaesthetic, I didn’t require any post operative pain relief. I was also extremely calm and relaxed before the operation, I gave myself suggestions that my immune system was strong and healthy and that I would heal quickly. This resulted in a very positive outcome.
On 16 th April 2008, a hypnotherapist was in the news for having surgery without anaesthetic. Mr Lenkei, from Worthing, used self hypnosis for an operation on his right hand. The operation which involved removing some bone in the base of the thumb and fusing some joints took 83 minutes. “I didn’t feel anything at all” Lenkei says. “There was no pain, just very deep relaxation”.
