Nothing impacts on our short and long term health quiet like weight does. It is well documented that being over weight is directly associated with heart problems, diabetes, types of cancer and the list goes on. In the short term being overweight puts a strain on the joints, causing joint pain; it is associated with depression and a general feeling of lethargy. Food is a drug - we became addicted to it and it causes mood swings and cravings, yet we take more care about the correct type of fuel to put in our cars than the food we eat.

Diets don't work - we know this because nearly two thirds of men and over half of women in England are now overweight or obese according to a report from the National Audit Office in 2001. The number is growing, just like the nations waist size. Ask yourself how many diets have you tried in your life? How much money have you spent on diet products? Are you tired of all the mixed messages you see in the media? Do you read with excitement the latest best new diet - guaranteed to shed all your excess weight, without any effort or hunger - sounds too good to be true? It probably is. When you try to be good, do you eat low calorie or diet food? Next time have a look at the label, read the ingredients and start doing some research on the internet about artificial sweeteners or about how sugar really affects your body. Maybe next time you won't be quite as tempted. But just becoming better educated and more aware about food is still not enough to become a size that each and every one of us is happy with. To be fit and healthy with a good body image is what we should be striving for and that will be different for each of us, because we are all individuals.
